X STANDS FOR THE UNKNOWN OR INVISIBLE
COMMONS IS UNDERSTOOD AS A SHARED RESOURCE / CAPITAL / SYSTEM / CAPABILITY AND SIMULTANEOUSLY AS A SHARED INABILITY / DEBT / WEAKNESS
This project is an inquiry toward identifying and observing the unknown commons (material or immaterial), with the primary objective of increasing our understanding of the spatial dimension of commons. The scope of this research initiative can vary as wide as studying the assurance commons of a separate nation to the study of the shared commons of global, cloud age populace.
While focusing on Armenia and its history, the starting point is a presupposition about territorial formations within our collective unconscious that affect our thinking, as well as the psychological and physical conditions of being. Societal habits and narrative identities, delineated from easily observable dimensions of life, are formed and entangled in realms such as collective memory, time, cultural memory... Recognizing these kinds of abstract notions as commons (unifying rations), the project will collect living or past narratives, depictions, memories or thoughts tied to a place or a territory (through text, images, or other media), and then convert them into an evidence-archive for further analysis and creative synthesis to be manifested through essays, drawings, visualizations, or other communicable media.
The ongoing research-interpretation-production loop, occupying multiple disciplinary spaces, will be defined by notional texts produced by the project's director/curator, as well as through critical questions emerging within the forum of thinking links (for more details see the website). This work may be done individually or collaboratively, through competitions, workshops or other taxonomies of collective intellectual production.
The project "x-commons," started as an initiative for the Luys Develop Armenia Together program, ultimately aims to establish a diverse international network of spatial thinkers, and become a platform for those interested in the questions of commons everywhere.
