X STANDS FOR THE UNKNOWN OR INVISIBLE

COMMONS IS UNDERSTOOD AS A SHARED RESOURCE / CAPITAL / SYSTEM / CAPABILITY AND SIMULTANEOUSLY AS A SHARED INABILITY / DEBT / WEAKNESS

This project is an inquiry toward identifying and observing the unknown commons, with the primary objective of increasing our theoretical understanding of the spatial dimension of commons. The scope of this ongoing research initiative can vary as widely as studying the binding commons of specific geography to the study of the shared commons of global, cloud age populace.

The primary line of inquiry is about design, the underlying common infrastructure of things, protocols, concepts, and presuppositions that inform the project of design at the time of surveillant environmental mandate.

Another line of inquiry is on territoriality of remembrances. Societal habits and narrative identities, delineated from easily observable dimensions of life, are formed and entangled in realms such as collective memory, time, cultural memory. Recognizing these kinds of abstract notions as commons, the project will collect living or past narratives, depictions, memories or thoughts tied to a place or a territory, and then convert them into an evidence-archive for further analysis and creative synthesis to be manifested through essays, drawings, visualizations, or other communicable media.

The ongoing research-interpretation-production loop, occupying multiple disciplinary spaces, will be defined by notional texts produced by the project's director/curator, as well as through critical questions emerging within the forum of the project. This work may be done individually or collaboratively, through competitions, workshops or other taxonomies of collective intellectual production.

x-commons, as a network, forum, collection, and a publication, strives to become an international collaborative of spatial thinkers, aimed at advancing the research/knowledge around the questions of commons plus aesthetics.
